Indestructible Coating Australia

Indestructible coating – the first of its kind

Indestructible coating is what the pentagon, truck bedliners, oil platforms in the Indian Ocean, and bulletproof vests have in common. Indestructible coating came to fame as a viral sensation thanks to a group of Australians who coated a watermelon with it, and dropped it from a height of 45 metres. To boost the fame the same group conducted the test also for an egg. Amazingly, not only did the watermelon not shatter, it bounced, same happened to the egg. However, indestructible coating has so many more uses than fruit and egg protection; originally designed to protect vehicles, indestructible paint has uses in sectors from heavy industrial and agricultural to marine and offshore.

In this article we will describe the incredible properties of indestructible paint, how to use them for your project, and where to find this extremely strong, yet flexible coating in Australia.

The science behind indestructible coating

Indestructible paint is essentially a blend of a coating called polyurea. Though the exact formula is kept secret, the coating is thus, a combination of an isocyanate and a polyol resin. The polyol works like a plasticiser, and when the two components are combined they react resulting in a long chain molecule. It is these chains that are responsible for the coating’s indestructible properties – all tangled up together, they make the coating hard and impenetrable, but because the chains can stretch out and return to place, it remains flexible. This gives the paint incredible tensile strength and tear resistance.

One of the best examples of this strength are the coating’s use in military applications. The Pentagon has its exterior walls coated in order to protect the building and its occupants from shrapnel, the main cause of injury in a explosion. It is also used in bulletproof vests to catch and contain bullet fragments when the bullet breaks apart on impact.

Unbreakable and 6 other benefits of indestructible paint coating

Not only is indestructible coating strong and flexible, which makes it unbreakable, it also brings many more benefits to a project. Due to the characteristics of the coating and its application, indestructible coating also provides:

  1. Minimum downtime – fast return to service
  2. High abrasion resistance and impact protection
  3. Acid and chemical resistance
  4. A watertight and airtight monolithic membrane
  5. No cracking, splitting, or warping
  6. No VOCs, no CFCs, no solvents

Industrial coating uses and application methods

Indestructible coating is a hot sprayed polyurea, which dries in seconds to minutes. The process is time sensitive because, once the two components are combined, the reaction begins immediately and irreversibly. Because of this, the coating must be applied with a special spray gun. The two components are pressurised then pumped into the gun through heated hoses. They are combined and sprayed at the same moment. This means that there is only seconds from the moment of spraying to having a dry surface.

The ease of application and desirable qualities of indestructible spray mean it finds applications in all industries from agriculture and machinery to marine and military sectors.

Applying indestructible coating as an indestructible spray

Indestructible coating is most often applied as an indestructible spray.

A few of the most common uses for indestructible spray coating include:

  • Secondary containment and bund lining
  • Roofing membranes
  • Light plant and machinery
  • Boat decksramps, and cargo holds
  • Silos and feed containers
  • Car park decks
  • Truck bed lining
