Water repellent coating Australia
Water repellent coating with nano technology
Nanotechnology makes it possible to develop hydrophobic and superhydrophobic coating systems which repel water and other waterborne liquids. Often the superhydrophobic coatings also have oleophobic properties meaning that they do not only repel water but also grease and oils. Such technology is beneficial for many protective coatings. The water repellent coatings are suitable for example for at home applications on textiles such as car interiors and clothes making them waterproof and easy to clean. The coatings are additionally suitable for glass and plastic surfaces such as windows, to make them last longer clean. The best part of the coating is that you don’t even see it! It namely, is transparent, does not colour and thus does not affect the appearance of the surface.
Superhydrophobic coating
Moisture is the worst enemy of many materials due to the fact that it contributes to faster corroding, damage and degrading. The effect of moisture is seen for example on concrete surfaces which over the years absorb moisture, which damages them due to the harmful contaminants in the moisture.
Superhydrophobic coating is also suitable for application on and in electronics; it can for example prevent shortcuts in circuit boards. Superhydrophobic nano coating bonds invisibly with the ultra small pores on the substrate.
Waterproof vs. hydrophobic
A regular waterproof coating forms a solid barrier between the moisture and the surface. As a result the water never reaches the surface but slides off instead. However, the film also makes sure nothing from the surface penetrates it; the material cannot breathe, which eventually leads to material damage. Regular waterproof coatings also may affect the appearance of the substrate due to the fact that they are usually applied in thick layers. Fortunately, superhydrophobic coatings are also waterproof and they additionally let the underlying material breathe increasing durability.
“Superhydrophobic literally means super scared of water.”
Water is actively repelled and the substrate remains breathable also after placing the coating on it. The advantages of superhydrophobic coatings include:
- Practically invisible layer
- No solvents used therefore odourless
- Pressure wash resistant (50-60 BAR)
- It does not change the appearance of the substrate and there is no colour infiltration
- It protects the substrate against damaging UV light
- Protects against ice and snow
- It’s easy to clean
- It protects the substrates and makes it more durable
Besides rain the super hydrophobic nano coating also protects from other waterborne liquids like drinks, sauces, mud and syrups. Therefore, it is suitable for use in restaurants and kitchens.
Hydrophobic solar panel coating
Solar power is one of the sources for renewable energy. Australian weather conditions are ideal for solar power generation. Hydrophobic solar panel coatings repel water and do not let the water drops stay on the surface; when the surface is free from water, dust and dirt, the power generation increases. Hydrophobic and other solar panel coatings can significantly improve the efficiency of the panels and energy production.
Hydrophobic solar panel coatings thus:
- Let more sunlight through to the panel
- Suitable for high temperatures
- Reduce panel maintenance
- Protects from the elements

Hi there
I am looking for a hydrophobic and breathable film material with flexibility, for the purpose of CO2 gas separation. Any coating or product can be sutable?
Thanks so much.
Shannon
